Project Scope

Partum Engineering’s scope of work includes a thorough review of existing Alcoa standards and drawings, alongside the development of a comprehensive electrical earthing standard for all WA sites, including mining operations.

This standard will address design, installation, and maintenance requirements for a range of components: substations, control systems, overhead powerlines, cable earthing, motors, VSDs, transformers, switchboards (HV and LV), RMUs, soft starters, lightning and surge protection, static shock protection for cranes, electrostatic precipitators, and trailing/reeling cables with earth continuity protection, as well as NERs and software compliance.

Challenges Overcome

  • Addressing conflicts between existing Alcoa earthing standards
  • Integration of existing Alcoa specifications and preferences with latest Australian Standards
  • Optimisation and standardisation of earthing material requirements
  • Multiple stakeholder inputs

Solution

  • Collaborated with key stakeholders at Alcoa to identify their preferred and most effective approach for resolving conflicts.
  • Applied Partum’s expertise within earthing field to provide practical solutions for Alcoa’s earthing installations
  • Applied industry best practices to align Alcoa’s earthing management standard with those of other leading mining and refining clients.
  • Recommended and implemented industry-leading earthing software to ensure consistent earthing design assessments across Alcoa’s WA operations.
