Project Scope

Partum provided the engineering and design for the Kanyirri 220/66/22kV Substation as part of the Pilbara Transmission Project.

The development of Kanyirri 220/66/22kV Substation Consisted of:

  • 1 x 80MVA 220/66/22kV Power Transformer with oil bund and oily water separator system
  • 1 x 220kV Hybrid Circuit Breaker
  • 1 x 66kV Hybrid Circuit Breaker
  • 220kV Surge Arresters, 220kV CVTs, 220kV SPI etc primary equipments
  • Earthing, Lightning, Lighting and CCTV System
  • AC auxiliary supplies including Emergency Generator
  • 22kV RMU
  • 220kV Control room foundation and yard equipment interfacing design

Civil/Structural:

  • Detailed construction drawings for earthworks and roadworks
  • Site external and internal drainage design
  • Transformer bund foundation design
  • 220kV & 66kV equipment Foundation, support structures
  • 220kV Controlroom foundation design
  • Site trenching and conduit design
  • Site perimeter Fencing layout and detail design
  • Future extension bay foundations design
  • Civil/Structural design calculations and report

Electrical:

  • Site General arrangement with future extension suitability
  • Site Elevations and clearance design
  • Detailed primary equipment electrical assembly with material selection and take offs.
  • Substation earthgrid, lighting and security CCTV layout
  • Detailed primary equipment earthing assemblies
  • Electrical calculations and design support documentation
  • Outdoor lighting, lightning, and earthing studies
  • Short circuit force calculations
  • Signage and labelling
  • Material take-offs

Challenges Overcome

  • Integration of the substation across the civil, structural, primary design
  • Optimisation of overall substation footprint with design to suit future expansion with minimal disruption
  • Interface with client supplied primary plant and secondary design
  • Interface with Client incomer Transmission Line design for correct phasing to substation

Solution

  • Worked collaboratively with Fortescue to develop Civil/Structural/Primary design
  • Use of 220kV & 66kV Hybrid Units (Combined CT, Disconnectors, Earth Switches, Circuit Breaker) to minimise overall footprint of the substation
  • Integration of future equipment & bay extension foundations within current design to minimise disruption for future installation
  • Use of precast culverts for control and MV cables to minimise construction time
  • Conducted Safety in Design workshops and regular client interfacing meetings to minimise unforeseen construction challenges.
  • Performed 3D modelling to avoid clashes for inground services.
