Project Scope

As part of the new Rio Tinto Koodaideri iron ore mine, Partum was engaged to undertake the design of the 33kV overhead
powerlines that started and ended at the 220kV/33kV bulk supply substation, forming a ring network configuration and
providing power supply to various critical Rio Tinto mine facilities.

The powerline included the connection of:

  • 220kV/33kV bulk supply substation and 34MW solar farm
  • Central and Fixed Plant facilities.
  • Village power station.
  • Radio Base Stations 1, 2 and 4
  • Borefields.

The powerline comprised of over 50km of phosphorus and cherry conductor along with a 60 core single mode fibre OPGW
throughout the mine.

Challenges Overcome

  • Design of double dual phosphorus circuits (4 x circuits).
  • Complex network ring configuration and tee offs.
  • Greenfield mine development causing multiple changes to powerline design mid-way of the project.
  • Complex interface with other disciplines (e.g. civil and mechanical).
  • Limited information at project commencement i.e. underground services.
  • Adverse terrain across the borefields.
  • Predetermined line route resulting in the need to cross large flood zones, heritage areas and environmental sensitive landmarks.
  • Tight design deadlines.

Solution

  • Design of several complex integrated 33kV overhead structures to meet network requirements and specific client’s application.
  • Proposed alternative line route to improve constructability, operability, and maintainability of the powerline.
  • Propose and design alternative network configuration to comply with Rio Tinto specification.
  • Technical consulting and support to address client’s unforeseen events (e.g. new haul road development, new solar farm, new borrow pit extension and so on).
  • PLS-CADD modelling and assessment to increase span lengths and reduce pole count.
  • Earthing system modelling and design including EPR on underground and above ground services.
  • Reviewed geotechnical studies and undertook the design for all structures and foundations.
