Project Scope

Partum was engaged for the design and project engineering procurement services for extension of the existing 132kV substation at Solomon with a new 132kV circuit to connect the new 220/132/11kV substation.

The scope consisted of:

  • Interfacing with the existing 132kV high busbar system
  • 2x 132kV Voltage Transformers
  • 1x 220kV (operated 132kV) Single Pole 220kV Hybrid Gas Switchgear consisting of combined disconnectors, earth switches, circuit breaker and current transformers
  • 3x 132kV Surge Arrestors
  • 1x Circuit Breaker Management (CBM) protection panel
  • Interfacing with the existing AC and DC supplies
  • Interfacing with the existing SCADA system for the new switchgear and the 220/132/11kV substation
  • Extending the existing bus zone protection

Challenges Overcome

  • Seeking to design the 132kV circuit to minimise the works within the existing system to reduce permit requirements
  • Interfacing with the existing high-level busbar system
  • Interfacing the aerial conductors and surge arrestor with the 132/220kV 100MVA power transformer
  • Limitations in the existing cable trench for new power and control cables
  • Site investigations of the AC, DC, SCADA and Communications infrastructure
  • Resolving issues with Point on Wave (POW) and Phase Sequencing Devices (PSD) relating to the circuit breaker Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV)
  • Assessing the lightning, lighting and earthing system for the new circuit within the existing substation
  • Extremely tight project timeframes with multiple substations being designed in parallel
  • Managing the tendering, cost evaluation, design review and technical input for equipment vendors

Solution

  • Assessing product options technically and financially including Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS), Dead Tank Compact (DTC) and Hybrid Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) to achieve cost savings in the material supply, construction and commissioning
  • Development of technical specifications for the switchgear
  • Foundation design high level busbars, voltage transformers and single pole Hybrid GIS
  • Primary design to extending the busbar with a clamping arrangement on to the existing busbar tube
  • Conduit and cable trenches for the new power and control cabling
  • Cable schedules and schematics for the protection, SCADA and Communications
