Project Scope

Partum Engineering has been involved in developing a power system model in DIgSILENT PowerFactory, performing short-circuit analysis, and conducting a site-wide protection review to identify malgrading and protection issues. The project also covers arc flash hazard assessments, the creation of arc flash labels for each switchboard, and the delivery of a detailed report and professionally printed labels.

Challenges Overcome

  • Limited information for existing brownfield infrastructure
  • Underground mine power network asset locations are difficult to access
  • No power systems model containing the full site wide protection devices and settings
  • No prior protection studies undertaken to ensure coordination between devices
  • Fast acting upstream utility protection settings limited ability to coordinate

Solution

  • Multiple site visits to gather relevant information regarding existing protection settings and equipment details
  • Leveraging off the DIgSILENT PowerFactory model developed by Partum for prior works of the power network for system studies and protection coordination
  • Applied Partum’s expertise on protection coordination and industry best practices to develop suitable settings for equipment where information was not available or accessible
  • Utilised selective malgrading where required to reduce number of impacted assets for key fault locations to minimise site outages
  • Optimised protection settings to reduce arc flash incident energy at switchboards reducing the extent of PPE requirements for operations and maintenance personnel undertaking work on the Beta Hunt electrical infrastructure
