Project Scope

Yandin Wind farm is a joint venture between Ratch Australia and Alinta Energy. Stage 1 has a combined capacity of 212MWp making it the largest wind farm in Western Australia with the ability to power up to 200,000 homes a year. The wind farm comprises of 51 turbines, each with a capacity of 4.2MW and a reported project value in the order of $400M.

The scope of works that the site based project engineering covered included:

  • Construction of the 330/33kV Facility Substation:
    • Earthworks, Civil and Structural
    • Primary Plant including 330/33kV 2x120MVA Power Transformers, 33kV switchgear and additional 33kV Capacitor Banks
    • Protection and Revenue Metering System
    • SCADA and Communications
    • Control and Switchroom Buildings including HVAC, Fire and Light & Small Power
    • AC/DC Auxiliary Supplies
  • Construction of a 33kV collector system (8x33kV distribution feeders) to the terminal points at the respective Wind Turbines
  • Interfacing 220kV transmission line and terminal substation provided by Western Power.

Challenges Overcome

  • Close out of the outstanding punchlist items with a reducing workforce and limited background knowledge as the project neared completion.
  • Complexities with the earthing system testing and compliance.
  • Tight design deadlines with penalties for late delivery.

Solution

  • Interfacing with stakeholders including GHD (Owners Engineer), VESTAS (Head Contractor), Decmil (Balance of Plant Infrastructure Contractor) and RJE Global (Substation Construction Sub-Contractor).
  • Successful energisation of the substation and export of power from the wind turbines to the Western Power network.
  • Inspecting installation is in accordance with design documentation, applicable standards and constructed to a high level of workmanship.
  • Managing punchlist register and ensure items actioned.
  • Review and compiling of test and handover documentation for submission to client in accordance with Document Management System.
  • Ensuring adherence Health, Safety and Environmental requirements
